Our History & Future

Halloween Against Hunger grew out of two Halloween events in the historic center of Farmington, CT. The Deming family's "Halloween House" on Mill Lane with a fully decorated house, yard, driveway and even the people was a yearly destination for trick-or-treaters from around the town. The second event was the "Haunted Meetinghouse" at First Church of Christ on Main Street. On Halloween the youth group decorated the Meetinghouse, then, in costume, distributed cider and donuts while spooky music streamed from the public address system.

In 2007 a few people saw an opportunity to combine community service work with the popularity of these Halloween celebrations. Since First Church houses the Farmington Food Pantry, a food drive seemed the perfect fit.

Over the next year, the creators reached out to the neighborhood schools, fire department, businesses and residents, offering a chance to support the food pantry and participate in the town's first large-scale Halloween celebration.

The ultimate goal of Halloween Against Hunger is to expand the fight against hunger throughout the year, not just the winter holiday season. Whenever people talk about the event, whenever a host posts a flyer, whenever a home or organization participates on Halloween night, the message is reinforced: hunger never ends.
