Talk about the effort. When trick-or-treaters come without food, ask if they might be able to participate with a donation next year. Remember, the message about fighting hunger needs to be repeated in order to be effective.
Don't be discouraged if you get very few donations during your first year. We are asking each trick-or-treater to bring one food item to one participating location each year, you might not be the first location that any particular person visits and they may have already made their donation. Say an additional thank you, and encourage them to participate again in upcoming years. Remember, this is not a contest; this event is about feeding our neighbors.
Spread the word about your event. Get your signs up early, post and distribute flyers around your street explaining the event, coordinate with other organizers and host locations, and/or contact local media outlets to enlist their support.
To hold donations, put a box/bin with a copy of the logo near your doorway, or wherever you will be meeting trick-or-treaters. At the end of the night, bring the box/bin inside (as cute as mice and raccoons are, our goal is not to feed them).
